After a perfect night’s sleep, day 3 of our Robertson adventure commenced, starting with a Mo&Rose at Soekershof breakfast.

Mo & Rose is a lovely property, situated about 7 km outside of Robertson, well known for its incredible succulent garden. This garden was started in the 1950’s and has hundreds of different succulent plants from all over the world, including cacti.

This oasis seated at the foot of the Langeberg mountains certainly has a distinctive look.

While walking around I saw quite a few different birds flitting about, a little herd of the cutest fluffy cows along the fence and a spectacular view of the mountains. What a great way to start any day! Oh and the breakfast was delicious too!

This cactus (below) is one of the oldest in the garden. I stood in front of it to give you some perspective on how tall it is. What a truly magnificent plant!

Then it was time for some wine tasting at Robertson Winery. Not just any tasting, a chocolate and wine pairing!

We went down into a dark cellar type room where the tasting was all set up. Turns out we were inside actual wine tanks! They used to store the wine in these underground cement tanks, which they now use for storage and the occasional tasting.

Our pairings comprised of the Kings River Chardonnay and a white chocolate with a lemon flavour, the Prospect Hill Cabernet Sauvignon and a dark chocolate with blackcurrant/dark chocolate centre, the Phanto Ridge Pinotage and a dark chocolate with moc/milk chocolate centre, the Wolfkloof Shiraz and a dark chocolate with white pepper/white chocolate centre, and finally, the Gewürtztraminer and Turkish delight dipped in milk chocolate. With every combination, you first taste the wine, then taste the chocolate and then taste them together. It’s quite remarkable how much impact the chocolate has on the flavour of the wine! Every individual palate is different so I can only speak for my own palate. For me, some of the wines tasted better after the chocolate and some of them were worse. The Shiraz was too much wine for little ol’ me but I thoroughly enjoyed the Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and the Pinotage! We bought a case of the Pinotage to take home with us, and I am not even a red wine drinker!

We were then taken into the depths of beyond to see all the old cement tanks that housed the wine.

They store barrels of brandy in these tanks now, while some just remain empty. The walls are covered in mould and black algae.

I have to say I am glad wine isn’t stored like this anymore!

Our next, and final, stop on our Robertson adventure was Van Loveren. This family vineyard has a beautiful garden with many trees that were planted in commemoration of momentous occasions in their lives, both personal and historic. We went on a tour of the garden and saw the Tangled tree, you may recognize this as the name of one of their popular wines, as well as many others! The stories behind them are very interesting so I recommend that you do the garden tour, with your glass of bubbly in hand!

We were treated to some of their pairings, they have many to choose from, including non-alcoholic versions of each one and some for the kids! There is the Cheese & Van Loveren wines, Charcuterie & Rhino Run wine, Chocolate & Tangled Tree wines, Christina Van Loveren Master Tasting, Four Cousins Fan Pairing, and the Fiver Party Plate. They are all lovely and there’s no way I could recommend one over the other, it all depends on what you feel like at that moment!
